Alternate Trustees & event based trusteeship

Alternate trustees is not a description for people who live alternate lifestyles, each to their own, rather it’s a reference to those who act in place of someone who would otherwise be trustee if not for circumstance. The law provides a number scenarios where other parties can act in place of the member but that doesn’t mean it automatically happens or that trustees understand how the process works.

This webinar will identify the circumstances where another person/s can take on the responsibility as trustee of an SMSF despite not being a member of the fund or indeed if they are already a member of the fund. These lifecycle events will impact all SMSFs so it’s important to understand all the considerations.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this webinar, participants will understand:
  • The role of an enduring power of attorney within an SMSF
  • How a fund can have more or less trustees than members based on circumstances
  • How intergenerational SMSFs must factor in life’s events
  • Some things won’t work in practice

This session will be issued with CPD hours for:

  • the SMSF Association
  • Tax Practitioner’s Board (TPB); and
  • The major accounting bodies.
