Looking under the hood of SMSF benefit payments

As an industry we have placed a significant emphasis on recent indexation from the view point of contribution opportunities and pension commencements. Whilst not overlooked or undervalued, benefit payments from an SMSF have been subject to annual indexation since the dawn of time (SMSF time), and they play an important role not only at retirement or death but also throughout other stages of life.

This webinar will look at the types of benefit payments made regularly and not so regularly from an SMSF and the different taxation and reporting obligations associated with each. Each payment type will be considered in light of varying conditions of release that members can avail themselves to and the associated obligations that trustees must satisfy to mee their regulatory requirements. Without putting too great an emphasis on pensions versus lump sums, we will also consider appropriate strategic considerations when a member is incapacitated or passes away.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this webinar attendees will:

  • Appreciate the nuances of permanent incapacity versus disability superannuation benefits including modifying lump sum benefits
  • Be able to articulate the pros and cons of taking a superannuation death benefit as a lump sum over a pension
  • Determine the appropriateness of terminal illness benefits
  • Understand the reporting and taxation obligations of paying benefits other than a pension from an SMSF
