Unit Trust investments in an SMSF

Following on from our recent property investment webinar, in our next event we will look at unit trusts.  Unit Trust investments can provide SMSFs with greater access to invest in property, greater opportunity to develop property, greater flexibility around such issues as borrowing, unitisation and estate planning as well as simplified single line reporting.  However, along with opportunity comes risk and the risks associated with getting it wrong can result in greater tax liabilities, greater compliance concerns and greater effort having to unwind structures and ensure accurate accounting.

In this webinar we will identify the different compliance and tax outcomes that can occur as a result of different types of unit trust investments that can be held by an SMSF.  We will also identify potential issues we see associated with unit trust reporting, particularly around distributions and valuations.  Finally, we will also contemplate any ongoing management issues that need to be considered as well as the inevitable liquidity issues unit trust investments can present.

Leaning Outcomes:

– At the end of this webinar, participants will have an appreciation for:

– The key distinctions between investing in related versus non-related unit trusts

– How property development influences the tax outcomes of trust investments

The importance of paying trust distributions as soon possible

– How pre-99 unit trusts and 13.22c trusts can work side by side
